Applications Overview

Throughout the environmental water cycle of precipitation, surface water, groundwater, coastal and everything in between, OTT Hydromet instruments are there to provide you with the water quantity and quality data you need. OTT Hydromet instruments are specifically designed to work in a variety of environmental and industrial applications and integrate together seamlessly with flexible telemetry options for remote data acquisition. 

Agriculture & Irrigation

OTT Hydromet sensors can provide key information on trend identification and regulatory compliance for water quality and quantity parameters around agriculture and irrigation activities. 

OTT water level and flow sensors can measure the discharge of an open water channel for irrigation modeling to better predict future water availability in agriculture. Additionally OTT groundwater level sensors can be used for similar purposes to productively use groundwater in agriculture applications. 

Adcon Telemetry wireless solutions combine ultra-low power compact robust devices with convenient and powerful software visualization tools to deliver key environmental agriculture and hydrometrological data via the Internet. 

Hydrolab and Sea-Bird Coastal instrumentation provide data on key water quality parameters for regulatory compliance to determine nutrient runoff and the overall effect of agricultural activities on natural water bodies.

Coastal & Estuary

Measurement of water quality in coastal regions and estuaries is critical in the characterization of hypoxic ‘dead zones’ as a result of nutrient loading and algal blooms in the water bodies. Sediment loading analysis through turbidity measurement is also important for coastal trend identification and modeling. Hydrolab and Sea-bird Coastal offer a variety of multiparameter water quality instrumentation and nutrient sensors for long-term coastal applications. 

Certain OTT level sensors (OTT RLS, OTT SE 200) are effective for sea level and tide level monitoring with radar and float pulley technology. Additionally, certain OTT groundwater level sensors can measure salinity and conductivity for detection of saltwater intrusion in freshwater coastal aquifers.

Flood Warning

Flood warning systems built into hydrological stations are used to notify local emergency authorities in the case of a flood event. 

OTT water level sensors and continuous flow sensors, paired with telemetry technology and OTT Hydrosystems are able to measure, collect, and transmit water level and velocity data in real-time to determine the peak level or flow during flood events, and alert local water and emergency authorities if a certain threshold is breached.

Flow & Discharge

Measuring water flow and discharge to determine the amount of water flowing through an open channel is critical for predicting water availability and flood events, allocating watering, and more. 

OTT Hydromet has been a leader in flow meter technology for over 100 years, from the first mechanical current meters to advanced acoustic Doppler technology used today, and offers a variety of technologies to measure flow and water discharge, from portable in-stream current meters and acoustic profilers, to side looking Doppler technology for continuous discharge measurement.

Groundwater

Measuring groundwater level or depth-to-water is critically important for identifying long term trends, including declining water levels, saltwater intrusion, seasonal variations, aquifer recharge, artificial aquifer storage and recovery, and level status for drinking water. Receiving groundwater data via remote data transmission from one of the many OTT telemetry options available saves time and resources spent in the field. 

Certain Hydrolab multiparameter instrumentation is also compact enough to fit in groundwater to measure groundwater quality in detail. Hydrolab sensors can also be equipped with a Rhodamine sensor to be used in in dye tracing studies to track water flow direction.

Hydropower

Monitoring the impact of Hydro-power plant activities on water bodies can be important for regulatory compliance and modeling purposes.

Hydrolab instruments can measure total dissolved gas (TDG) levels around Hydropower activities and both Hydrolab and Sea-Bird Coastal instruments can be used to monitor temperature and dissolved oxygen upstream and downstream from plants to ensure regulatory levels are met and power production is optimal. 

OTT sensors can be used to measure water level and flow of the reservoirs feeding the hydro-power plants, as well as the in-flows and out-flows from the plant and sluice monitoring.

Meteorology

High-accuracy precipitation data is used for watershed monitoring, airport and highway transportation forecasts,  general weather forecasting,  and Doppler radar ground truthing. 

OTT Hydromet offers a variety of precipitation measurement technologies, including high-accuracy laser disdrometers and weighing bucket gauges that can be paired with multiple telemetry and power options for deployment in remote locations.

Mining

Ensuring that pollutants from mining activities do not enter surrounding natural water bodies is a key issue in environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance. 

Hydrolab multiparameter sondes can measure a variety of parameters pertaining to mining operations including conductivity and specific conductance, total dissolved solids, salinity, pH & Redox potential (ORP), chloride, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Both OTT and Hydrolab sensors can be setup with telemetry options to trigger alarm messages if certain parameter thresholds are breached.

OTT groundwater level sensors can measure current water levels around mining operations and support systems that regulate and pump water levels around mining sites. Groundwater quality can also be monitored, typically with conductivity as a surrogate measurement. 

Nutrient Monitoring

Continuous monitoring of nutrient levels provides crucial information about daily, seasonal and event based changes in water quality conditions, and can be a strong indicator on the overall health of the water body.  In recent years, monitoring of nutrients has grown in importance as it has come to the forefront in regulatory compliance of water quality in many regions.

Sea-Bird Coastal offers several solutions for long-term unattended measurement of nitrate and phosphate in real-time, while Hydrolab multiparameter sondes have several sensor options for nutrient measurement as well.

Oil & Gas

Monitoring natural water bodies surrounding oil and gas drilling activities like hydraulic fracturing is a key issue in environmental monitoring and regulatory compliance. 

Hydrolab multiparameter sondes can measure a variety of parameters pertaining to energy operations including conductivity and specific conductance, total dissolved solids, salinity, pH & Redox potential (ORP), chloride, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Both OTT and Hydrolab sensors can be setup with telemetry options to trigger alarm messages if certain parameter thresholds are breached.

OTT groundwater level sensors can measure current water levels around oil & gas operations and are involved in remediation monitoring, typically using conductivity as a surrogate measurement. 

Surface Water

Measuring water quantity and quality in surface water (open channels, rivers, reservoirs, lakes, and estuaries) is one of the foundations of hydrological monitoring and has been a focus of OTT Hydromet since its first  water current meters were designed in 1875. 

OTT Hydromet provides versatile technology options for measurement of water level, flow/discharge, and water quality in surface water applications:

  • OTT surface water level sensors featuring a variety of measurement technologies (radar, bubbler, pressure) to meet many application needs
  • OTT current meters to measure surface water flow and discharge, with options for in-stream portable measurement or fixed installations
  • Hydrolab mulitparameter sondes for measurement of water quality either in spot sampling or unattended in real-time
  • Sea-Bird Coastal instruments for unattended nutrient water quality measurement

Urban Hydrology

Urban Hydrology deals with the specific aspects of the hydrological cycle in urban and industrial settings. This includes all natural water flows as well as the consideration of precipitation, storm water, groundwater, rivers, and lakes, but also the infrastructure and systems for water supply and sanitation in a city.

OTT sensors and systems provide input data for addressing the various water-related tasks in urban areas, including:

  • Acquisition and transmission of rainfall and runoff data for sewage networks and stormwater retention basin management
  • Remote monitoring of the water supply infrastructure in order to recognize problems in the pipeline system to prevent and resolve issues of water supply shortage, and minimize costs caused by damage to the water supply system


Hydrolab water quality probes can also measure the effect of urban and industrial activities around surrounding water bodies.
